Race Rules for the Rotary
Club of Broome
Dragon Boat Regatta
- All teams must pay the entry fee at least two weeks prior
to the races commencing.
- All team members must have read, agreed to the conditions
and signed the race rules and liability form before being
eligible to race.
- Teams (boat crew) must consist
of:
• Minimum number will be 14.
• Maximum number will be 18.
• Included must be a minimum of 4 female members, a Drummer
and a Sweep.
•
A maximum of two children permitted in each boat – refer
to Item 22.
- Compulsory safety briefing will be held for Team Captains
at the Commentator’s Box in the morning and Team Captains
are responsible for passing on the information to their
team members.
- A training/practice day will be held before the race
day. Teams will be expected to make use of the availability
of
a boat for practice during the weeks prior to race day.
Only Sweeps that have attended training will be allowed
to take control of a boat.
- Teams are to assemble for preliminary Tug of War events
before their first Dragon Boat Race. The final Tug of War
events are to be held after Dragon Boat Races have concluded.
- Teams are to assemble for other races in the Marshalling
area prior to the completion of the previous race or 10
minutes prior to the starting of the race. Due to time
and tide constraints,
teams may be disqualified for holding up races, so please
listen to the commentator calling for assembly of your
team.
- Beach Start Races will start from the waterline on
the beach where Marshals will give instructions as to the
positioning
of the boats. Beach Start Races will start:
• When the team members (except the Sweep) are in the boat.
• When the team is ready, the Team Captain will instruct the
Drummer to raise the drumstick.
• Once all Drummers have raised their drumstick above their
heads.
• All Sweeps will then enter the boats.
- Deep Water Start Races will start from the designated
start line where Marshals will give instructions as to the
positioning of the boats. Water Start Races will start:
• When all boats are in their designated starting position
• When the team is ready, the Team Captain will instruct the
Drummer to raise the drumstick.
• Once Drummers have raised their drumstick above their heads.

- Race starts will be the following commands: “Ready”,
“Paddles Up” and “Go”.
- Teams will have 3 minutes from when the first boat is
in the starting position to get into position – those
failing will be disqualified.
- The Sweep will tell the crew when to stop paddling after
the boat crosses the finishing line, after which Paddlers
should keep their paddles resting on top of the water to
steady the boat.
- The finish boat officials will confirm the order of teams
that cross the finish line.
- Finish boat judges will decide the placegetters and whether
boats have correctly completed the race, and their decisions
will be final.
- Teams will
be disqualified from their race if they:
• Deviate from their course and interfere with another
boat’s safe passage.
• Deliberately capsize their boat and/or an opposing
team’s boat.
• Start prior to the official start.
- Time and tide permitting, races may be re-run without
the offending team.
- On returning to the beach, each team will empty all water
from their boat and place paddles in their respective positions.
- Only Team Captains can register protests with onshore
judges.
A non-refundable protest registration fee of $50 is required
to be paid at the time of registering any protest.
- Offshore judges decisions shall be final.
- Points shall be calculated as follows:
1st place 4 points
2nd place 3 points
3rd place 2 points
4th place 1 point
• Entry to the Semi-Finals will be based on points
only.
• Entry to the Finals will be based on the four highest
point scorers.
• Teams will be chosen on the number of 1st, 2nd and
3rd place wins if points for two or more teams are equal;
if still equal, prizes (1st and 2nd, or 2nd and 3rd) to
added together and equally split.
- Any intoxicated person at the Marshalling Point will
be refused entry into the boats.
- Children may participate if:
• Children must be fourteen years or older.
• Two adults must accompany each child under 16 years.
• Children must wear life jackets
– Team Captains to enforce.
• A maximum of two children permitted in each boat.
- Adults must be able to swim competently. If a
non-swimmer, they must be identified and wear a life jacket.
